New Patron Information
Welcome to the Laconia Public Library!
All materials circulate for two weeks and may be renewed twice. Item type limits and exceptions are in the table on the Registration and Loan page. If an item you would like to check out is already checked out to someone else, then you can place a hold on it and we will add your name to the waiting list. If you provide your email address (or cell phone number for text messages) our system will send you helpful notices about overdue items and arrived holds.
The Board of Trustees supports and accepts the American Library Association’s “Code of Ethics” point III which states:
We protect each library user’s right to privacy and confidentiality with respect to information sought or received and materials consulted, borrowed, acquired or transmitted. Further, although these records may be necessary for the pursuit of justice by law enforcement agencies, they shall not be released except by subpoena, even when a library user has opted in to retain their circulation history.
Important Information for Parents/Guardians of children under age 12:
As mandated in NH RSA 201-D:11, an individual library cardholder has the right to privacy of information regardless of age. This applies to the juvenile/child library card, while still holding the parent/guardian financially responsible for any lost or damaged materials.
In order for a child to get a library card in their own name, you, as legal guardian, agree to take financial responsibility for any materials taken out on that child’s card. The card must be presented at each transaction if the child is not present. A parent whose account is not in good standing may not use the juvenile/child card in place of their own.
After searching, if you don’t see an item that you’re looking for, and it’s been released within the last year, you can let us know! We can’t purchase everything, but we’re always open to hearing what our patrons are interested in. Just fill out this handy form to let us know what you’d like to see! or, if it’s an item that has been released for more than a year, we can try to borrow it from another New Hampshire library through our inter-library loan program, just fill out this form.
Are you looking for suggestions for what to read next? Not only do we have some staff-curated lists, but we also have NoveList Plus. Log in through your library account to search Novelist by series, by author read-a-likes, award-winning books, genre (western, Christian fiction, historical novel), and lots more. A great tool to help readers like you find a book you will enjoy reading. Novelist provides a collection of fiction and non-fiction titles for all ages, and is a great resource for book discussion groups! Need help? Watch Shayla’s video to get started.
Our library pass program is super popular, and we currently have passes available to Squam Lakes Natural Science Center and Castle in the Clouds. We are able to issue one pass per day, so we recommend reserving one in advance. For the details on what the passes are good for, check out our passes page.
Are you interested in ebooks or audiobooks? We have two services you can use, Hoopla or Overdrive/Libby. With Hoopla, you can use up to five downloads a month, while with Overdrive you can use the Libby app for three downloads at a time. You can use both services! Overdrive has newer, popular titles, but there are waiting lists. Hoopla has more backlist titles, and there are no waiting lists! Hoopla also has music, tv shows, and graphic novels to download.
